HOW HARD WILL YOU FIGHT JUST TO BE HEARD?

Man to Man is a hard-hitting, emotional rollercoaster that follows a father-son relationship at the point of no return. Dion has just been beaten up at school, only to be taken straight to the boxing ring by his father Malcolm, looking to ‘make a man’ out of him. Tensions fly high as Dion decides he is not the kind of man his father wants him to be and refuses to learn how to fight. The two go head-to-head in the ring, locked in a battle of words until the impossible happens. They start listening to each other. After so many years of avoidance, Malcolm and Dion finally bat it out, debating about what it means to truly be a man in today’s world.

Behind the Film

Process and Impact

Man to Man was born out of conversations with our young team about what issues they would like to see on screen. Amidst a vast range of issues, time and time again, the idea of intergenerational dialogue came out.

A group from our team collaborated with us every step of the way, from creating the idea, bringing this story to life, pitching to funders, conducting interviews with family and friends, to doing script read-throughs with our wider team.

The goal was to bring the strongest layer of authenticity to the story so that each character represented felt truly genuine to their generation’s struggles.

This proved to be a cathartic project for so many young people as they processed the difficult conversations in their lives. The icing on the cake was pitching our project to the legendary David Harewood and hearing his response: “You lot are too inspirational. I’m all in”.

Man to Man created opportunities for 40 young people to be involved in its inception in mostly paid roles, and the film has sparked conversations around mental health, toxic masculinity, intergenerational trauma, racial identity and so much more.
